Herkimer BOCES honors career and technical education graduates
June 16, 2017

Automotive technology graduates on stage
The Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES automotive technology program Class of 2017 is recognized on stage during the Herkimer BOCES career and technical education completion and awards ceremony on June 13 in the Little Falls High School Auditorium.

LITTLE FALLS – More than 200 students were recently recognized for completing their career and technical education programs at Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES.

During the ceremony, Herkimer BOCES CTE Principal Kathy Fox congratulated all the students. When they started at BOCES two years ago, they might have been looking for something different, known exactly what they wanted to study or just taking a chance. Along the way, they developed skills and problem-solving abilities, persevered and worked hard, she said.

“Graduates, best wishes for continued success” she said.

The Herkimer BOCES career and technical education completion and awards ceremony took place on June 13 in the Little Falls High School Auditorium. Students were also recognized for awards and scholarships they won.

The event opened with comments from Herkimer BOCES Chief Operating Officer James Picolla and a video produced by the visual communication media arts students.

As students walked across the stage to be recognized for completing their CTE programs, awards were presented by Fox, Herkimer BOCES Board of Education President Daniel LaLonde and CTE Assistant Principal Sally Kramas.

“When you walk into the world, just remember we will always have your back,” Kramas said to students.

Also during the ceremony, two retiring Herkimer BOCES CTE instructors were recognized: collision repair instructor Mike Browne and child and family services instructor Kim Fragetta.

Herkimer BOCES School To Careers liaison and work-based learning coordinator MaryBeth Napolitano read a message from Jon Caiola, a 2006 graduate of the collision repair program. Caiola was unable to attend but still wanted to share his thoughts with graduates and Browne.

Caiola, who is an automotive body repairman at Panella’s Collision in New York Mills, wished the best of luck to the Class of 2017 and said in the message read by Napolitano that the the skills he obtained at BOCES prepared him to succeed in his occupation and in life.

“Mr. Browne inspired me to be the person I am today both personally and professionally,” he said.

Lori Bunce, association subject educator for the Child Care Council of Cornell Cooperative Extension and a 1992 graduate of what is now the Herkimer BOCES child and family services program, also called Fragetta an inspiration and talked about presenting her with the Vivian C. Kinney Lifelong Friend of Children Award at the Child Care Council of Cornell Cooperative Extension’s 2017 Recognition Awards Dinner on May 9.

Bunce told graduates she remembers sitting in their seats 25 years ago – saying they started at Herkimer BOCES as adults and are leaving as adults.

“Many of you might be sitting here wondering what your future holds,” she said.

Bunce recommended that the students have passion for their work, dedication and perseverance. She challenged them to reach their full potential.

She also spoke about parents, grandparents, guardians, teachers, aides, principals, coaches, mentors, friends and others who play an important role in students’ path to graduation.

“Although you have worked hard, you had many people guiding you along the way,” she said. “The best way to show your gratitude to those individuals is to make the most out of opportunities you are given.”
