HERKIMER – Little Falls resident Tammy Konik has been bringing a 1957 Chevy to the Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES Cruise-In Bike Night & Chicken BBQ for the past three years.

Konik said she looks forward to the event – particularly because it supports students in the Herkimer BOCES chapter of SkillsUSA.

“That’s why we come,” she said. “And we do the bake sale and the auction. The money helps the kids with what they’re doing.”

The annual Cruise-In Bike Night and Chicken BBQ on June 15 raised more than $3,000. Proceeds from the event are used to support SkillsUSA student club activities at Herkimer BOCES and to send students to the SkillsUSA championships.

“We appreciate everyone’s support,” said Holly Rotundo Fischer, Herkimer BOCES cosmetology instructor and SkillsUSA advisor.

SkillsUSA is a national organization for students who are enrolled in technical or trade programs and aims to help students develop leadership abilities through participation in educational, occupational, civic, recreational and social activities.

In addition to the car and motorcycle show, the Cruise-In Bike Night & Chicken BBQ includes a bake sale, Chinese auction and 50/50 raffle operated by the Sopranos Cruzers, with music provided by Audio King.

Karen Cool, of Dolgeville, said she brought a 1964 Ford to the Cruise-In last year. Because of concern about rain, the car was left behind this year, but she still attended. She said it’s a nice event, and she likes that it benefits students.

“I think it’s really good if they made money to help them out,” she said.

James Smith, of Ephratah, also said it’s good that the event supports a student club.

“That’s always important,” he said.

Smith entered a 1969 Chevelle into the Cruise-In, and he enjoys the car show, he said.

“We go to all the ones that we can,” he said. “This is nice.”
