HERKIMER – If you notice Herkimer village police and fire vehicles have a clean shine to them, you might be able to thank students in the automotive technology portion of the Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES summer youth employment and training program.

Students in instructor Craig Miller’s summer automotive technology class cleaned Herkimer Police Department vehicles on July 13 at Herkimer BOCES and Herkimer Fire Department vehicles on July 20 at the fire station. The students also have been learning skills for general car maintenance such as car washing and detailing – including holding car washes at Advance Auto Parts in Herkimer – and checking fluids and air pressure.

There are 30 students participating in the summer youth employment and training program at Herkimer BOCES. Students spend seven days in four different programs: automotive technology, conservation, culinary and information technology and are at BOCES from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on the days they attend. Through grants, the students are paid for their work and receive a free breakfast and lunch.
