Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES students recently captured two second-place finishes during the SkillsUSA Leadership and Skills Championships at the New York State SkillsUSA State Conference.

The students who placed were:

  • A team of Herkimer BOCES Building Construction seniors Marshall Borek, of Herkimer; Josh Douglas, of Mount Markham; James Baisley, of Dolgeville, and Devin Gorinshek, of Dolgeville, won second place in the Team Works building competition.

  • Herkimer BOCES Information Technology Academy junior Anthony Treonze, of Mount Markham, won second place in Technical Computer Applications.

“The SkillsUSA competitions are a great chance for students to put the career-based skills they’ve learned at Herkimer BOCES into action,” said Holly Rotundo Fischer, Herkimer BOCES cosmetology instructor and SkillsUSA advisor. “It’s an opportunity for students to compete among peers from across the state and gain more experience with skills that could be valuable in their career paths.”

A total of 45 Herkimer BOCES students and four advisors attended the 52nd SkillsUSA Leadership and Skills Championships from April 25-27 at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse.

Prior to the state conference, Herkimer BOCES students competed at the SkillsUSA Area 2 Regional Competition held on Feb. 2 at Morrisville State College.

The Herkimer BOCES SkillsUSA students were able to attend the competitions in part because of funds raised during the annual Cruise-In Bike Night Chicken BBQ. This year’s Cruise-In event takes place on June 14 at Herkimer BOCES at 352 Gros Blvd. in Herkimer. More information about the fundraiser will be available soon at www.herkimer-boces.org, www.facebook.com/HerkimerBOCES and www.twitter.com/HerkimerBOCES or by calling 315-867-2043.
