HERKIMER – Thirty-eight local adults are now in position to work as licensed practical nurses and/or continue their education after graduating from the Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES Adult Practical Nursing Program.

The LPN students were honored during the program’s 55th Commencement and Pledge Ceremony on June 19 at Herkimer High School.

Herkimer BOCES District Superintendent Sandra Sherwood said to graduates during the ceremony that Herkimer BOCES aims to meet its tagline of “creating opportunities for growth,” and the nursing program does just that.

“You’re fulfilling a need in our community for healthcare and moving your families forward,” Sherwood said.

The Herkimer BOCES Adult Practical Nursing Program is currently recruiting students for upcoming classes. For information, call 315-867-2210 or visit www.herkimer-boces.org/LPN or www.facebook.com/HerkimerBOCESLPN.

During the 55th Commencement and Pledge Ceremony, Herkimer BOCES Board of Education President Daniel LaLonde presented the diplomas, nursing faculty awarded graduation pins, nursing program Coordinator Sara Nicolette led a candle-lighting ceremony, nursing instructor Janet Vickers led the students in a nursing pledge and Herkimer BOCES Director of Adult, Early Childhood and Outreach Education Mary Kline officially announced the nursing Class of 2019 as graduated.

Melissa Ippolito, a registered nurse and the director of nursing at Valley Health Services, was the guest speaker for the ceremony. She said the Herkimer BOCES nursing program is a vital part of the community.

“You’re all needed,” she said.

Ippolito congratulated the families of the graduates for making it through the emotions of nursing school right along with the graduates as they experienced frustrations, long nights, missed events and tears.

She also encouraged graduates to never lose their passion and to not let challenging days bring them down.

The nursing program has a full-time class, a part-time class that runs during the day and a part-time class that runs during evenings. A representative from each class gave a farewell address.

Full-time student Chassie Henderson-Bice spoke about a year that wasn’t easy.

“This journey has been a struggle for all of us at one point, but we’ve been able to make the best of it, beyond the education,” she said.

Part-time day student Alesha Miles gave comments including about the support the students are thankful for.

“With that being said, I am happy to say to the Class of 2019 that we did it,” she said.

Part-time evening student Teresa Cahill spoke about the late nights, clinical experiences and endless studying.

“Congratulations, Class of 2019,” she said.
