The 170 students who completed Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES Career and Technical Education programs this school year were honored in a graduation-style ceremony on Tuesday, June 13, at Herkimer College.
“Congratulations to all seniors,” Herkimer BOCES District Superintendent Sandra Sherwood, during her welcoming comments. “You’ve been working hard and learning how kindness and hard work pay off to a lot of opportunities.”
The 2023 Career and Technical Education Completion Ceremony celebrated students who went through any of the 14 two-year Herkimer BOCES CTE programs – including students in the Valley Pathways in Technology Early College High School (VP-TECH). Students were also recognized during the ceremony for various awards they won.
Sherwood praised students for persevering through the COVID-19 pandemic during their high school years, and she said the students inspire Herkimer BOCES administrators and staff.
“Go out to the world and do good things and help us build a better tomorrow,” Sherwood said.
During the ceremony, Herkimer BOCES Technical Education Principal David Itzo, Assistant Principal Dennis Hooks and Board of Education President Holly Pullis presented the awards and certificates to students.
Herkimer College Provost Michael Oriolo was the guest speaker. He talked about the strong partnership between Herkimer College and Herkimer BOCES and congratulated students.
“You are now prepared for careers in emerging professions,” Oriolo said.
The keynote speaker was Gabrielle Lewosko, a 2019 graduate of the Herkimer BOCES Conservation program who is now a natural resource conservation tech for the Herkimer County Soil and Water Conservation District.
“Looking back on my younger days, going to BOCES was one of the best decisions I made,” Lewosko said. “I’m sure many of you agree.”
Lewosko explained how going to BOCES led to her job working in conservation. She said that if students want something, they should set their mind to it and work for it.
“Choose your dreams over your excuses – your dreams are more exciting anyway,” she said.
