Student receiving awards from teachers at Pathways Academy ceremony

Dozens of awards were handed out in a variety of categories such as academics, attendance, participation and kindness during the 2023-24 first quarter Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES Pathways Academy Awards Ceremony.

The quarterly Pathways Academy Awards were started in 2017 and are part of the school’s Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program. Students’ families are invited in to attend the awards.

“This first award ceremony for the year is always exciting for everyone,” said Pathways Academy teacher Erica Haver, who is a team leader for the PBIS program at Pathways. “Returning students strive to earn their awards and are excited when the time comes. The new students are excited as this may be the first award or awards that they have received in several years. We have great parental attendance, and each year it increases at each awards ceremony. Each ceremony encourages all students to keep doing their best to earn awards in the future.”

The Pathways Academy Awards Ceremony took place on Friday, Dec. 1, at the Herkimer BOCES Remington Educational Complex in Ilion.  The Herkimer BOCES Pathways Academy focuses on students who have had a difficult time in a traditional school structure or have to catch up on credits but have the ability to get a high school diploma. Pathways Academy classes are project-driven and infuse career and technical education.

The PBIS program includes various aspects including the awards and students earning “BOCES Bucks” for positive behavior that they can use on reward days to purchase items or experiences.

Herkimer BOCES Principal of Alternative Education Cory Pike welcomed students and family members in attendance to the ceremony. Teachers went up to the front of the room to help greet and congratulate students as they received their awards.
