ALTERNATIVE HIGH SCHOOL EQUIVALENCY PROGRAM (AHSEP)

The AHSEP at Herkimer BOCES is located in the same building that houses Pathways, our LPN program and our Adult Literacy programs. We will follow all requirements that are already in place for these and all the programs that are operated by Herkimer BOCES. Close coordination with the Herkimer County Health Department has existed since the beginning of the COVID crisis. We will follow their direction in the event of a potential case.

  • Daily monitoring of health conditions and sign off by staff and students

  • A nurse is located in the building and AHSEP students would be sent to the Health office if anyone exhibited symptoms of illness

  • Student sign in and out to be used for contact tracing by the Health Dept.

  • Daily cleaning and multiple cleaning of high touch areas

  • Masks will be required of all students and staff

  • Use of smaller class sizes and social distancing

  • Setting classes up in cohorts so there is limited mixing of populations

  • Protocols for closure are in place in case of a COVID -19 case or high numbers of positivity

In consideration of the health, safety and well-being of students, families and staff, our plan is designed to enable transitioning between in –person, remote and hybrid learning environments to ensure the provision of consistent learning with the changing health and safety conditions that exist.

The AHSEP at Herkimer BOCES is small. We have always tailored the program to meet the individual needs of each student. This combined model will allow for the flexibility to meet the ever changing situations that COVID-19 mandates.Though live lessons are a priority, we recognize we have to be flexible in a remote learning environment. We anticipate that students will attend live lessons or may need to watch recorded lessons or specific on-line resources at a later time. Students will be expected to complete assignments and submit their work via ZOOM, Google classroom or other modality.

To ensure a high- quality remote learning a blended model of Synchronous (live instruction) and Asynchronous will be implemented. Teachers may also provide live lessons through video conferencing.

Students will all be set up with a google email address during their first day of school. An assessment of what type of connectivity and hardware each student has will be determined. Materials to be used in case of a shutdown will be created and sent home with the students in case they are needed.

All guidelines that have been established by Herkimer BOCES will apply to the AHSEP.
