For the majority of 17 minutes, the steady hum of the heating system served as the only background noise as Herkimer BOCES students remembered the 17 victims of the school shooting in Parkland, Florida.
Every time a Herkimer BOCES Special Education student or teacher was “caught” showing kindness or being a good friend during February, a heart was added to a bulletin board in the hallway.
A meeting of school superintendents and law enforcement agencies in the Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES region resulted in a plan to reactivate a Safety in Our Schools Task Force, have more impromptu law enforcement visits to schools in the area and schedule lockdown drills and debriefings involving law enforcement.
Students attending Career and Technical Education programs at Herkimer BOCES had a 94 percent graduation rate for the 2016-17 school year. Follow-up surveys of Herkimer BOCES 2015-16 graduates show that 99.37 percent of respondents are employed, in the military or are in college or other post-secondary and advanced training. Open House is 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 14.
Herkimer BOCES employees were able to send out more than 180 cards, letters and pictures to veterans in November and received a letter of thanks from Operation Gratitude.
