About the Building Construction program:

The Building Construction program offers training in the basic fundamentals of the construction trades through the design and construction of a modular home constructed on site. The program is comprised of the following four essential areas in the construction field: carpentry, masonry, residential electric and plumbing. Over the course of two years, students will develop basic skills in the following areas: rough framing, finish carpentry, windows, doors, roofing, mortars, block and brick work, tiling, basic wiring and plumbing. These skills will provide students with the option of furthering their education in college or finding entry level employment in the construction field. The program is accredited by the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER).

Program overview:

Building Construction is a two-year program designed to prepare students with training in the construction trades through the design and construction of a modular home built on site.

The program is comprised of the following four essential areas in the construction field:

  • Carpentry

  • Residential electric

  • Masonry

  • Plumbing

Over the course of two years, students will develop basic skills in the following areas: rough framing, finish carpentry, windows, doors, roofing, mortars, block and brick work, tiling, basic wiring and plumbing. These skills will provide students with the option of furthering their education in college or finding entry-level employment in the construction field. The program is accredited by the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER). Students also participate in community service projects.

NCCER Certifications:

  • Carpentry level 1

  • Core level 1

Articulation Agreements through partnerships with: SUNY Alfred, SUNY Delhi & Fulton-Montgomery Community College.

Work-based learning hours: 175 on site.

Two-Year Breakdown:

First Year Modules:

  • Orientation to materials & fasteners

  • Floor systems

  • Introduction to hand & power tools

  • Introduction to hand tools and basic safety

  • Learn about construction and building trades

Second Year Modules:

  • Plans and elevations

  • Window and exterior door installation

  • Measurements, drawings and specifications

  • Introduction to construction

  • Wall and ceiling framing

  • Roof framing

  • Math and introduction to construction drawings

Class Alumni:

Recent graduates can be found continuing their education at SUNY Alfred, SUNY Delhi, SUNY Morrisville, Fulton Montgomery Community College, Mohawk Valley Community College, Utica College.

Some have joined the Tile Setters, Carpenters, Electrical, Bricklayers and Laborers Unions.

Others have found employment in the private sector with local contractors.
