About the Health Science Careers program:

Health Science Careers students practice with a mannequin

This course is an appropriate program for students interested in health careers. Students cover the certified nursing assistant program. At the end of the program, the students are eligible to take the state certification exam. An in-depth study of career options is explored through a senior culmination project. In the last 20 weeks, students study modules in phlebotomy and EKG and can become certified in theory through MedCa. They also study medical terminology as preparation for post-secondary studies in health careers.

Outcomes:

This course is appropriate for students interested in health careers. Students cover the certified nursing assistant program. At the end of the program, students are eligible to take the New York state certification exam for nursing assistants.

Students participate in an in-depth study of career options through internships and a senior culmination project. They also study medical terminology as preparation for postsecondary studies in health careers.

Alumni: Where are they now?

Graduates have continued their education at SUNY Delhi, Utica College SUNY Polytechnic Institute, Hartwick College, St. Elizabeth’s School of Nursing, Mohawk Valley Community College, Herkimer College and the Herkimer BOCES Adult LPN Program. Many are employed by local nursing homes including; Valley Health Services, Alpine Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, The Grand Rehabilitation and Nursing at Mohawk Valley, Foltsbrook Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation, Sitrin Health Care Center and Medical Rehabilitation Center.

Students can receive potential college credits and scholarship money through the Herkimer BOCES Adult LPN Program.

Work-based learning:

108 hours of off-site clinical experience available (pending requirements are met).
