Child and Family Services student presenting for public speaking project

Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES Child and Family Services students spoke about topics such as literacy, safety, puppets and felt boards during informative presentations they gave to an audience as part of their public speaking course.

Seniors in Child and Family Services instructor Sarah Schubert’s class have been taking a public speaking course this school year with Career and Technical Education English teacher Sarah Crowe, and the presentations on child development were part of that course.

“They each worked to create an informative presentation for a group of educators, parents and peers who are interested in working with children in their future careers,” Crowe said. “Audience members were encouraged to ask the presenters questions to gain a better understanding of how to support those in early childhood to develop both socially and academically. The point was made that we can all have an impact in a child's life, because we all interact with young children at some point, and we all have something to teach.”

In their public speaking course this school year, Child and Family Services students have been gaining experience with their presentation and speaking skills while also receiving college credit through Herkimer College.

Herkimer BOCES Supervisor of Equity, Diversity and Curriculum Initiatives Patricia Wilson was one of the attendees for the presentations and said she appreciated seeing how each student presented about a different topic.

“Each topic was vitally important for young child care for educators or future parents,” Wilson said. “I enjoyed listening to their presentations and then participating at the end when there were questions, answers and comments shared. They did a great job.”
