Building Construction student drilling while working on a house

HERKIMER – The Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES Building Construction program is still looking for a recipient for the next house built by the program with no costs for labor.

Herkimer BOCES Building Construction students have been building a house each school year dating back to 1982, but the only person who expressed interest this year in receiving the next house had to back out, so there isn’t anybody lined up for the house.

If you’re interested in receiving the house, attend an informational meeting at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, May 31, in the Building Construction classroom at the Herkimer BOCES William E. Busacker Complex at 352 Gros Blvd. in Herkimer. Enter the classroom directly by going around to the back parking lot (where you will see the current house the class is building).

If you have any questions, contact Herkimer BOCES Building Construction instructor John Martin at 315-867-2600 or jmartin@herkimer-boces.org.

If multiple people are interested in the house, a drawing will be held to determine who receives it.

The selected homeowner pays the cost of materials and transportation of the house from Herkimer BOCES to its location. The labor is provided for free by high school juniors and seniors under the supervision of Martin and teaching assistant Shelby Creater.

The house would be built during the 2023-24 school year for completion in June 2024.

The Herkimer BOCES Building Construction program is the only BOCES program in the state that constructs a full house every school year.
