Are you in need of a haircut? Color? Perm? Manicure?

Salon Illusions at the Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES Career Tech Center is now taking appointments.

Customers from schools and the local community are invited to receive services including cuts, coloring, perms, manicures, pedicures, waxing and more from seniors in the Cosmetology program and adult students. Following state requirements and under the supervision of highly trained instructors, students gain real work experience while working in the salon.

Adult student Lauren Smith said working in the salon is a great benefit of taking the Cosmetology program.

“Gaining confidence and experience is helping me prepare for my career in this field,” Smith said.

Salon Illusions, the name of the program’s cosmetology clinic, is located at the William E. Busacker Complex at 352 Gros Blvd. in Herkimer. The salon is open to the public 8:45 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings. Call 315-867-2043 to schedule your appointment.

Students from the 10 Herkimer BOCES component school districts have the opportunity to enter this two-year program. Adults are also welcome to enroll. Upon the successful completion of this program, students can obtain their New York state cosmetologist license to work in a salon.

Central Valley senior Jenna Buttacaroli said she has gained knowledge in the program that has prepared her to now advance to the clinic.

“Working on mannequins gives you the practice to be ready to perform on clients,” Buttacaroli said.

Dolgeville senior Kaylee Lynch said the program will allow her to graduate with skills she can use.

“I have something to fall back on, and this is a service that’s always needed,” Lynch said. “I enjoy making people feel good about themselves.”
