Local adults interested in becoming nurses and local students interested in joining technical education programs in high school will both have their chance during mid-March open houses at Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES.

Adult Practical Nursing Program Open House

The Herkimer BOCES 2024 Adult Practical Nursing Program Open House will take place from 6-8 p.m. on Monday, March 11, in the Gateway Center on the second floor of the ARC Herkimer building at 420 E. German St. in Herkimer.

The Adult Practical Nursing Program Open House will provide an opportunity for local adults to visit the new nursing facility that opened in 2023 and find out how they can join the program and become a licensed practical nurse.

Guests will be able to visit classrooms and labs, receive admission packets, meet teachers, hear about financial aid options and learn about scholarships from Foltsbrook and Working Solutions.

The Adult Practical Nursing Program offers a full-time class, a part-time day class and a part-time evening class. Those interested in joining the program can complete an interested form at www.herkimer-boces.org/forms/lpn. For more information, visit, www.herkimer-boces.org/lpn.

Career and Technical Education Open House

The Herkimer BOCES 2024 Career and Technical Education Open House will take place from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 13, at the Herkimer BOCES William E. Busacker Complex at 352 Gros Blvd. in Herkimer.

The Career and Technical Education Open House will help introduce potential students and their families to Herkimer BOCES technical education programs – including the 14 CTE programs, Valley Pathways in Technology Early College High School (VP-TECH) and Real Experience and Designed Instruction in Technical Education Careers (READiTEC).

Open House attendees will be able to visit the program classrooms and meet the teachers.

Students who join Herkimer BOCES CTE programs attend for their junior and senior years of high school. Students who attend VP-TECH or READiTEC start in ninth grade.

The component school districts that can send students to Herkimer BOCES are Central Valley, Dolgeville, Frankfort-Schuyler, Herkimer, Little Falls, Mount Markham, Owen D. Young, Poland, Richfield Springs and West Canada Valley.

Herkimer BOCES offers the following 14 CTE programs: Advanced Manufacturing, Automotive Technology, Building Construction, Child Family Services, Conservation, Cosmetology, Criminal Justice, Culinary and Hospitality, Health Science Careers, Heavy Equipment Repair Operations, Network Administration, Power Sports & Agricultural Mechanics, Visual Communications and Media Arts, and Welding and Metal Fabrication.

VP-TECH focuses on technology, project-based learning and real-world work situations. Students join VP-TECH in ninth grade and can spend four to six years in the program to earn a Regents diploma, a certification in advanced manufacturing, connections with local businesses and a no-cost associate degree from Herkimer College in quality assurance, esports management, networking or electrical engineering technology.

READiTEC is a pre-vocational exploratory program for ninth and 10th grade students. READiTEC gives students access to all 14 CTE programs, the ability to learn trades jobs and the opportunity to then join one of the CTE programs for 11th and 12th grade if they choose to.
