Herkimer BOCES Health Science Careers student Madison Russell with her second place medal from HOSA Spring Leadership Conference

Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES Health Science Careers senior Madison Russell recently won second place for the second year in a row in the Healthy Living competition at the New York State HOSA-Future Health Professionals Spring Leadership Conference.

Herkimer BOCES Health Science Careers instructor Christe Zambri took 11 students to the state conference to participate in competitions and learn about leadership for health professionals.

“This particular group of students were very excited to be part of the experience and enjoyed every minute of the conference,” Zambri said. “They are already talking about attending next year and have gained so much motivation to make next year even better.”

The 2024 New York State HOSA Spring Leadership Conference took place from March 19-21 at the Double Tree by Hilton in Syracuse. HOSA, formerly known as Health Occupations Students of America, describes itself as “a global student-led organization, whose mission is to promote career opportunities in the health industry and to enhance the delivery of quality health care to all people.”

For winning second place in the Healthy Living competition, Russell, from Central Valley Central School District, qualified to compete at the HOSA 2024 International Leadership Conference from June 26-29 in Houston.

In additional to Russell, the Herkimer BOCES Health Science Careers students who attended the conference were Central Valley Central School District students Josephine Aney and Taylor Dicob; Frankfort-Schuyler Central School District students Sophia Hazeltine and Gio Maldonado; and Little Falls City School District students Gracie Bohannon, Mya Crisell, Kaylee Kirkpatrick, Gia Reyes, Alexis Ruggerio and Gabrielle Slater.

Dicob and Bohannon tested for and achieved the New York State Achievement Award and each received a pin.

At the state Spring Leadership Conference, the Herkimer BOCES students, who were a mix of juniors and seniors, also had the opportunity to meet with Louise Bigando, the New York State Education Department’s health sciences education associate.
