Fifth grade students in the Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES Honors Program recently enjoyed a morning of viewing and creating art at the Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art on the Hamilton College campus.
Students explored the exhibition “Menagerie: Animals in Art” from the Wellin Museum through facilitated activities led by museum docents.
Students were encouraged to look for the intersection of art and innovation. With close looks at Albrecht Durer's rhinoceros print, naturalistic renderings of animals and an indigenous fishing tool in the Wellin’s collection, students learned about the role of art in technological advancement as well as the universality of animals across artistic mediums. Through hands-on printmaking, students experimented with one of the most innovative technological processes in world history.
Fifth graders from Central Valley, Dolgeville, Herkimer, Little Falls, Poland, Richfield Springs and West Canada Valley participated in the Herkimer BOCES Honors Program visit to the Wellin Museum on Tuesday, Oct. 29.
The Herkimer BOCES Honors Program is open to students in Herkimer BOCES component school districts and is designed to support the potential of students in grades 3-12 who have above average interests and abilities in a particular area. Programs allow for interaction with like-minded peers. Students learn by engaging in educational activities with presenters who are noted in their field. Exploration and programs provide for different learning styles and include topics in the arts and sciences as well as literature and history. Ongoing evaluation of all programs by teachers and students assures their relevance and quality.
