Three Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES Health Science Careers students recently attended a Herkimer BOCES Board of Education meeting after making history earlier this year – becoming the first students from Herkimer BOCES to participate in the HOSA International Leadership Conference.
Currently seniors in the Herkimer BOCES Health Science Careers program, Little Falls student Iris Wick and Central Valley students Reegan Mowers and Jasmin Taylor attended the HOSA International Conference as juniors in June 2025 in Nashville, Tenn. They competed in the category of Mental Health Promotion and received Excellence Awards.
The students attended the Herkimer BOCES Board of Education meeting on Thursday, Oct. 9, and presented to board members their presentation from the HOSA competition.
HOSA, formerly known as Health Occupations Students of America, describes itself as “a global student-led organization, whose mission is to promote career opportunities in the health industry and to enhance the delivery of quality health care to all people.”
The Herkimer BOCES Health Science Careers program is designed for students interested in health careers. Students cover the certified nursing assistant program. At the end of the program, students are eligible to take the New York state certification exam for nursing assistants. Students participate in an in-depth study of career options through internships and a senior culmination project. They also study medical terminology as preparation for post-secondary studies in health careers.
