It was a great Halloween week activity for local fourth graders as they learned about creating their own creatures through writing and drawing at a Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES Honors Program workshop.

“Author Jason Edwards led participants through the process of producing their own fantastic creations,” Herkimer BOCES Honors Program Coordinator Deborah Schoff said. “He was both captivating and engaging, and students enjoyed his energy and theatrics.”

The Herkimer BOCES Honors Program’s “Creature Crafting 101! Writing & Drawing” workshop took place on Monday, Oct. 27, at the Herkimer BOCES Gateway Center. Students attended from Central Valley, Dolgeville, Herkimer, Little Falls, Owen D. Young, Poland, Richfield Springs and West Canada Valley.

“Students worked on character development, weaving in both distinctive traits and internal characteristics,” Schoff said. “They discussed settings and developed the plot. The result was fabulous, original short stories and comics. Many students were courageous and shared their work with the group.”

Participants also took home a signed copy of “Will Allen & The Great Monster Detective” by Edwards, along with a writing journal to help them on their reading and writing journeys.

The Herkimer BOCES Honors Program is open to students in Herkimer BOCES component school districts and is designed to support the potential of students in grades 3-12 who have above average interests and abilities in a particular area. Programs allow for interaction with like-minded peers. Students learn by engaging in educational activities with presenters who are noted in their field. Exploration and programs provide for different learning styles and include topics in the arts and sciences as well as literature and history. Ongoing evaluation of all programs by teachers and students assures their relevance and quality.
