Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES special education teacher Leanne Byard will be receiving an Outstanding Educator award at the 19th annual Celebration of Education hosted by The Genesis Group and First Source Federal Credit Union on Thursday, Nov. 20, at Hart’s Hill Inn in Whitesboro.
“Receiving this award is deeply gratifying, and I feel so honored,” Byard said. “It is a validation of the countless hours spent preparing lessons, supporting students and striving to make meaningful connections in the classroom.”
Byard has served as a teacher in the Herkimer BOCES Special Education Autism 6:1:2 program for the past eight years. Herkimer BOCES Supervisor of Special Programs at the WEB Complex Danielle Wayman said she nominated Byard for the award for her dedication to the BOCES programming.
“She plays a vital role in supporting both students and colleagues,” Wayman said. “She mentors new teachers, co-led professional development surrounding all topics on autism for new team members this past summer, establishes the foundation of structured teaching for our youngest learners and pilots new curriculum initiatives.”
In addition to her school-year work, Byard contributes to the Extended School Year (ESY) program each summer.
“She is a valued member of the Special Programs Department, consistently focused on providing students with the skills and opportunities they need to succeed and develop independence with high academic standards,” Wayman said. “She is calm, professional and contributes so positively to our WEB Complex-Special Programs community.”
