Local third graders not only learned about storytelling but also met and worked closely with many students in their grade level from across Herkimer County during a recent Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES Honors Program workshop.
“Throughout the day, they worked with different acquaintances as they practiced storytelling with one another,” Herkimer BOCES Honors Program Coordinator Deborah Schoff said. “They had opportunities to share their work and speak in front of their peers.”
Third graders from Central Valley, Dolgeville, Frankfort-Schuyler, Herkimer, Little Falls, Owen D. Young, Poland, Richfield Springs and West Canada Valley attended the Storytelling with Regi Carpenter Herkimer BOCES Honors Program workshop on Thursday, Nov. 6, at the Herkimer BOCES Gateway Center in Herkimer.
Participants spent the day with Carpenter – learning some of her tips and tricks for telling a great story.
“Carpenter began with repetitive phrases and movements as she told stories, creating an engaging environment where students were entertained with silly stories that brought joy and laughter throughout the day,” Schoff said.
Carpenter taught students to use their voice, sounds, repetition, gestures, facial expressions, and body language to make the story memorable.
One of the students’ favorite parts of the workshop was story drawing, Schoff said. By telling the story in small parts and adding different lines and shapes, students learned to tell the story and had a complete illustration at the end.
“A great deal of learning and fun was had as students focused on the parts of a story and how their storytelling delivery makes all the difference,” Schoff said.
The Herkimer BOCES Honors Program is open to students in Herkimer BOCES component school districts and is designed to support the potential of students in grades 3-12 who have above average interests and abilities in a particular area. Programs allow for interaction with like-minded peers. Students learn by engaging in educational activities with presenters who are noted in their field. Exploration and programs provide for different learning styles and include topics in the arts and sciences as well as literature and history. Ongoing evaluation of all programs by teachers and students assures their relevance and quality.
