Local high school students recently had the opportunity to give a practice musical audition for college and then work with professors from Hartwick College to improve their audition piece during a Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES Honors Program workshop.

“The experience and feedback from the college level were well received and provided a wonderful growing experience for the participants,” Herkimer BOCES Honors Program Coordinator Deborah Schoff said.

Students in grades 9-12 from Central Valley, Dolgeville, Frankfort-Schuyler, Herkimer, Little Falls, Owen D. Young and West Canada Valley attended the Herkimer BOCES Honor Program’s Music College Audition Master Class on Wednesday, Nov. 12, at Central Valley Academy.

Hartwick College Director of Vocal Programs Steven Nanni and Hartwick College Music Theory Department assistant professor Dr. Ana Laura Gonzalez were the clinicians who worked with students.

The workshop was designed for students who are interested in attending college to pursue a musical degree. Part of a music college application process is an audition – vocally, instrumentally or both.

“Those auditioning were encouraged to know the piece they were performing deeply, how it feels, what it is expressing and what it means to them,” Schoff said. “Clinicians worked with students on posture, facial expressions, movement and fluid motions. Students will take this coaching experience and use it to improve their audition piece.”

The Herkimer BOCES Honors Program is open to students in Herkimer BOCES component school districts and is designed to support the potential of students in grades 3-12 who have above average interests and abilities in a particular area. Programs allow for interaction with like-minded peers. Students learn by engaging in educational activities with presenters who are noted in their field. Exploration and programs provide for different learning styles and include topics in the arts and sciences as well as literature and history. Ongoing evaluation of all programs by teachers and students assures their relevance and quality.
