Thirty-four Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES Career and Technical Education seniors were inducted into the National Technical Honor Society during a ceremony on Tuesday, Feb. 24, at the Herkimer BOCES William E. Busacker Complex.
Herkimer BOCES Principal of Career and Technical Education Sheri Perry and Herkimer BOCES National Technical Honor Society advisors Sarah Schubert and Samantha Wahl presented certificates to the students. Students also received NTHS graduation cords and pins indicating that they are two-year NTHS members.
To close the event, Schubert welcomed students to the honor society.
“This is an honor that you will be able to carry with you throughout your education and your career,” Schubert said.
The induction ceremony included comments from Perry, Schubert and keynote speaker Tamara Banks, who graduated from the Herkimer BOCES Cosmetology program as an adult student and was a member of NTHS. Students led other portions of the event including the “Pledge of Allegiance,” a candle-lighting ceremony and speaking about the NTHS purpose, colors, emblem, motto and slogan.
Students who presented during the event included Abigail Becker, Caileigh Youker, Molly Vickers, Cooper Jordan, Rocco Santimassino, Madison Cool, Ruslan Kurganov, Aleah Chabrier, Isabella Maass, Sierra Atwater, Dezirae Schlaepfer and Navy Escamilla.
During the keynote speech, Banks talked about how Herkimer BOCES prepared her to enter into a career.
“Coming to BOCES taught me to hit the ground running,” she said.
Banks also spoke about the value of going to a Career and Technical Education program – whether or not you end up working in that career.
“The knowledge and skills that you have learned here – no one can take that away,” she said.
