Students and a guide looking at art at Wellin Museum

Third-grade honors students recently visited two exhibitions at the Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art at Hamilton College and created their own quick-drying collage paintings during the Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES Honors Program event.

Museum Education Manager Marjorie Hurley, Assistant Manager Emily Girard and student docents guided students through the museum as they focused on four program goals: feeling a sense of belonging in a museum setting; strengthening skills related to viewing, interpreting and discussing art; deepening one’s understanding of how different settings are an important element of personal identity and how settings relate to storytelling, and exploring art materials and expressing oneself through artwork.

“Marjorie and her staff provide outstanding programs for our students,” Herkimer BOCES Honors Program Coordinator Deborah Schoff said. “They create and guide age-appropriate discussions and activities that help students develop skills that allow them to interact within an art setting. This was a wonderful opportunity for students to develop a deeper appreciation of this artist and an art museum in general.”

Third graders from Central Valley, Dolgeville, Frankfort-Schuyler, Herkimer, Little Falls, Poland, Richfield Springs and West Canada Valley attended the field trip to the Wellin Museum on Friday, March 13.

The Herkimer BOCES Honors Program is open to students in Herkimer BOCES component school districts and is designed to support the potential of students in grades 3-12 who have above average interests and abilities in a particular area. Programs allow for interaction with like-minded peers. Students learn by engaging in educational activities with presenters who are noted in their field. Exploration and programs provide for different learning styles and include topics in the arts and sciences as well as literature and history. Ongoing evaluation of all programs by teachers and students assures their relevance and quality.
