Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES Cosmetology student Isabella Burton was elected as a state officer during the recent SkillsUSA state conference and will be attending the national conference in June in Atlanta.

Herkimer BOCES students also captured third place in four different competitions at the state conference.

A total of 52 students from Herkimer BOCES attended the SkillsUSA New York State Leadership and Skills Conference from April 22-24 at the Syracuse Fairgrounds along with Herkimer BOCES SkillsUSA advisors Holly Fischer, Melinda Maycock and Sarah Jacquays-Alberts and chaperones Robert Richards and Mason Fisher.

At the conference, 16 Herkimer BOCES students participated in the House of Delegates, which involves student representatives making decisions including SkillsUSA bylaws and goals. As part of this, Burton, of Little Falls City School District, was elected as a state officer. While attending the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference from June 1-5 in Atlanta, Burton will receive officer training to prepare her for her leadership responsibilities in the 2026-27 school year.

Herkimer BOCES students also participated in various skills competitions, and the following Herkimer BOCES students captured awards:

-Visual Communications and Media Arts seniors Laila Groomes (Central Valley), Sarah Rearick (Central Valley) and Keirsten Avery (Little Falls) won third place in the Promotional Bulletin Board competition.

-Power Sports & Agricultural Mechanics senior John Terns (Mount Markham) won third place in the Small Engine competition.

-Network Administration senior Kaden Kleist (Dolgeville) won third place in Information Technology Services competition.

-Conservation senior Stephen Cooley (Frankfort-Schuyler) won third place in Extemporaneous Speech competition.
