Hundreds of local students from school districts and across the region recently learned about career opportunities and tried out hands-on exhibits during the annual Greater Mohawk Valley Construction Career Day.
The Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES School to Careers program partnered with the Syracuse Builders Exchange to help facilitate the event on Thursday, May 14, at the Oneida County Department of Public Works in Oriskany.
This yearly career awareness event invites students from all schools in the region to spend a day learning about career opportunities in the skilled trades industry. Students from all three local BOCES – Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES, Oneida-Herkimer-Madison BOCES and Madison-Oneida BOCES – attended the event, so participation included 31 school districts across six counties and classes from The Arc, Oneida-Lewis Chapter.
The event features hands-on activities, giveaways for all students in attendance and lunch from Melt food truck. Students made connections with representatives from labor unions, the state Department of Transportation and many other companies looking to hire and train the next generation of skilled trades professionals.
