The Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES Conservation class captured four state titles while competing in the New York State Conservation Competition on Thursday, May 21, at SUNY Morrisville against other BOCES conservation programs from across the state.
Herkimer BOCES Conservation students also earned more than $7,500 in scholarships through the competition.
“Students represented the program with outstanding sportsmanship, determination and skill while competing in a variety of forestry and conservation-based events,” Herkimer BOCES Conservation instructor William Carpenter said. “The students delivered an impressive performance throughout the day, earning multiple top finishes and bringing home several state titles.”
Herkimer BOCES Conservation students placed in the following competitions:
Tree Identification: Cooper Jordan (Herkimer) won first place, and Caileigh Youker (Dolgeville) won second place.
Axe Throw: Kenny Pelzer (Little Falls) won first place, and Thomas Goonan (Herkimer) won second place.
Female Bow Saw: Avril Lamphere (Little Falls) won first place, and Nevaeh Lindsay (Little Falls) won third place.
Pulp Throw: Jack Nevills (Herkimer) won first place.
Female Pulp Throw: Grace Wheatley (Owen D. Young) won third place.
Peavey Log Roll: The team of Kaden Looman (Frankfort-Schuyler) and Kacie Owen (Mount Markham) won third place.
Fire Build: The team of Kacie Owen (Mount Markham) and Collin Weisser (Herkimer) won third place.
“The Conservation class demonstrated tremendous effort, teamwork and dedication throughout the competition,” Carpenter said. “Their success reflects the hard work they have put in all year developing forestry, outdoor and conservation skills. The program is extremely proud of all students who competed and represented Herkimer BOCES at the state level.”
