DID YOU KNOW? Every year, when the Herkimer BOCES Building Construction program completes a house and prepares it to be moved, a branch from a tree on the BOCES property is attached to the house for good luck.
Building Construction teacher John Martin said former teacher Ed Head started the branch tradition, so Martin has continued it along with teacher Shelby Creater.

Another house built by the Herkimer BOCES Building Construction program is on the move to its new location to become a home!
This house was primarily built last school year, and this year's students have already started work on the next house!

Day five of Rescue Heroes Summer Day Camp began with a presentation on nutrition and wellness by Herkimer BOCES School to Careers liaison Sarah Crowe. Throughout the week, Crowe provided healthy meals and snacks for the students to sample, culminating in a Rescue Heroes themed Healthy Recipe Booklet full of nutrition information for all students to take home so that they would be able to recreate some of their favorite dishes from the week.
Self defense training was provided by Mike Masi, Cosmo Pellegrino and Staysha Forsey. Students were able to practice many techniques for staying safe and escaping an attacker. They certainly had fun practicing these techniques with their partners.
Our final keynote to wrap up the week was Katie Jakaub, an environmental conservation officer, who presented on the benefits of careers working for the DEC, including a recent increase in salaries, retirement benefits and an opportunity to work outside with a wide variety of skills and responsibilities.
The day ended with a Completion Celebration that was open to families. Students were given personalized awards, as well as gifts, including: a Rescue Heroes hoodie, yoga mat and water bottle. An ice cream sundae bar wrapped up the event. We said goodbye to our seniors and can’t wait to see many of the students return next year. We hope to meet new camp attendees in summer 2026. Spread the word about this award-winning program, which will expand to two weeks in order to accommodate younger female students.

Day four of Rescue Heroes Summer Day Camp included more hands-on activities where students were able to hone their own first responder skills during Stop the Bleed and CPR training. Stop the Bleed training was presented by Tom Moran, who is a trauma education, injury prevention and outreach coordinator from Albany Medical Center. Tom was once again joined by Meghan Delaney of Amsterdam Professional Firefighters, who also spoke about her long career saving lives. All students received their own Stop the Bleed Kit.
The CPR and first aid training was once again provided by MOVAC. Laura Askew led the interactive presentation, spoke to students about her rewarding career as an EMT and gave students a tour of the ambulance. All students are now CPR certified.

Day three of Rescue Heroes Summer Day Camp was an eventful field trip to the Syracuse Fire Department Regional Training Center, where we were once again in awe of the level of training and skill it takes to become a career firefighter. Female firefighters spoke with the students about the benefits of their career path, including a high level of job satisfaction and camaraderie with their teammates. The message was clear that firefighters truly love what they do. Students toured various aspects of the training center including a live burn demonstration.

Day two of Rescue Heroes Summer Day Camp this year was a field trip to the New York State Division of Homeland Security Preparedness Training Center, where we got to see all aspects of training that the center offers including state-of-the-art swift-water rescue, active-shooter training and so much more.
We capped off the day with a visit to Oneida County Emergency Services 911 Dispatch, where we learned about careers as a 911 dispatcher, getting to see behind the scenes on a typical day and how impressive their communications skills and systems truly are. We call 911 dispatchers the first line of all first responders.
