The Connections Across the Spectrum event took place last night at the Herkimer BOCES WEB Complex!

April is Autism Acceptance Month, and we are proud that Herkimer BOCES offers a wide range of programs and expertise to support students with autism across our region. Our team, including special education teachers and various related service team members, all bring a wealth of knowledge and unique perspectives to the work we do every day.

This event was truly a team effort. Thank you to our presenters for sharing valuable insights on behavior and communication – and to our dedicated staff who provided free childcare so families could fully participate. Thank you to the families who came out. It was well attended, and we are grateful for their continued partnership.

Our goal was simple: support our community, share resources and help connect families as they navigate their children’s educational journeys.

We partnered with many community organizations last night to bring a wealth of knowledge and support for families: RCIL, UCP, Jump the Line Advocates, FACE Center, Herkimer ARC and Herkimer County Sheriff's - Project Lifesaver.

Presenters included: special education teacher Emily Hayes, speech-language pathologist Danielle Sponable, special education teacher Gabrielle Stemmer, special education teacher Ian Wiernicki and behavior specialist Veronica Rogers.

We’re grateful to everyone who joined us and made the evening so meaningful, and we will plan more in the future to continue supporting our autism community.

A special visit from the Easter Bunny brought joy to our Special Education students today!

Students also had the opportunity to observe live chicks that were hatched by our Career Prep class in their classroom.

We extend our sincere appreciation to our staff, as well as our Career Prep and Career Awareness classes, for their support of our specials event coordinator in facilitating this event.

Herkimer BOCES Pathways Academy student Michael Grecco, who attends the Trade Industries class for work-based learning, recently made Adirondack chairs in class for a Poland Volunteer Fire Co. fundraiser raffle!

Pictured, from left: Trade Industries teaching assistant Cheri Evangelista, Poland Volunteer Fire Co. Captain Jeff Hubalek, Pathways Academy student Michael Grecco (from Herkimer CSD), former Pathways Academy student and current Poland Volunteer Fire Co. Safety Officer Sam Lynch and Trade Industries teacher Adam Spatto.

This project took place after Herkimer BOCES Board of Education member Michele Szarek, who represents Poland CSD, reached out to the Trade Industries class about having the chairs made last year and again this year. Grecco made the chairs, and Hubalek and Lynch picked them up.

📚🎉 Last week was Read Across America Week - including at Herkimer BOCES Special Programs! 🎉📚

Our students had a fantastic time celebrating Reading Across America last week! Special Events Coordinator Michelle (Thing One) and the Cat in the Hat helped us kick off the festivities with exciting classroom visits and lots of smiles.

Throughout the week, students enjoyed creative hat-making activities, engaging reading time and even virtual visits from famous authors. It was a wonderful celebration of literacy, imagination and the joy of books!

We are so proud of our students and staff for making this week such a fun and memorable experience. Keep reading! 📖✨

Mrs. Darling's K-2 8:1:1 class at Pathways Academy recently joyfully celebrated the 100th day of school with a variety of engaging, hands-on learning experiences centered around the number 100!

Students proudly created festive crowns labeled “I’m 100 Days Smarter,” showcasing their excitement and sense of accomplishment. As part of the math-focused activities, they prepared a special trail mix made up of 10 pieces of 10 different snacks, reinforcing place value concepts in a fun and delicious way.

To strengthen counting skills, students carefully counted out 100 Fruit Loops to design and create colorful necklaces, practicing one-to-one correspondence and number sequencing. Throughout the day, they also participated in collaborative building challenges, using 100 LEGO bricks, Magnatiles and Lincoln Logs to encourage teamwork, creativity and problem-solving.

The celebration continued with interactive music and movement activities, as they sang counting songs to 100 and practiced skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s. The day was filled with meaningful learning, cooperation and excitement as they celebrated being 100 days smarter together!
